Fiddle Academy warmly welcomes fiddle/violin students of all ages and abilities. We meet (usually fortnightly) during the Orkney school term at the King Street Halls in Kirkwall, Orkney (please see newest dates below.) In addition to those who attend in person, students from all over the world connect with us on the day via Zoom - taking part without being heard!
Our repertoire includes tunes from Orkney, Shetland, Scotland, Ireland, America and Scandinavia. We break the pieces down in to manageable chunks, allowing those students who struggle to read the music or prefer playing by ear to do so - all players welcome. We explore how to read music, improve technique, increase speed and ultimately try to improve our sound. It's a lively and friendly, no pressure, get together. Although the classes predominately consist of adult learners, mature minded children are also always very welcome. Simply come along when you can - pay as you go!
There are three class levels - come along to all three if you fancy:
Improving Beginner Unfortunately there is no absolute beginner class running at the moment but if you've never played before I do offer one on one lessons. You could take some with a view to joining one of the other classes at a later date. One on one lessons are priced at £24 per half hour and £48 per hour and can be taken in Harray, Orkney or online via Zoom - please get in touch, using the form below.
Beginner/Intermediate 3pm to 4pm - many of the 2pm attendees progress to this class. We continue to play the basic tunes but begin expanding our repertoire as well as continuing to improve technique - it's all just a bit faster! Recent tunes have included Slockit Light, Dark Island, Flett Fae Flotta, Bonaparte's Retreat etc.
Intermediate/Advanced 4.15pm to 5.15pm - this is the most advanced class - but is not ridiculously difficult! We explore trickier tunes, sometimes trying third position and going in to the flat keys. Most recent tunes included Sandy Burn Reel, Wissahickon Drive, Dingieshowe Dancers, Star of Munster and The Watchmen's Polka. We also ‘just play’ familiar pieces learned in the 3pm class but with more detail, harmonies, ornamentation and ‘lift’ etc!
Many 3pm class attendees also attend the 4.15pm class. Each hour long class is charged at £12 per week you attend (£24 to attend two.) There is no requirement to book each class in advance - you can just appear on the screen or simply turn up in person! However, it is recommended that new attendees use the form below to make contact.
This term we will also be working on the pieces we plan to perform in St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall on Hogmanay - attendance in the concert is optional.
